Cover Comments

Canine Behavior: A Photo Illustrated Handbook is a must read for learning about what our best friends are saying to their dog and human companions. It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words and Barbara Handelman shows how true this is. Dogs around the world will surely benefit from this easy to read book.

Marc Bekoff, University of Colorado; author of The Emotional Lives of Animals and Animals Matter, and editor of the Encyclopedia of Human-Animal Relationships.

This book has the best array of illustrations of canid behavior that we’ve ever seen. Each one is of professional quality, even when showing those brief, subtle motions that make up a sequence of motor patterns so critical for canid communication or performance. The inclusion of Monty Sloan’s photographs of wolves at Wolf Park gives a perspective to *Canine Behavior* that is varied, in-depth, and unusual in canid behavior literature.

Raymond and Lorna Coppinger Co-authors of DOGS and long-time participants in the activities of working dogs

Canine Behavior: A Photo Illustrated Handbook is an invaluable reference tool for dog enthusiasts of all levels. The photographs are spectacular; the book is worth buying for the pictures alone! The text provides insight into the intent of and the meaning behind our dogs’ actions. Understanding what they are telling us (via their body language) is the first step in preventing and resolving behavior problems-  Barbara Handelman  graciously shares her knowledge and experience in this wonderful book which will certainly help readers to increase their knowledge and understanding of their canine companions.

Sheila Segurson, DVM, DACVB

For the serious student of canine body language, Barbara Handelman's marvelous compilation of photos offers a detailed look at the many subtle and not so subtle ways that dogs speak dog.   This book features the work of some talented photographers capturing a wide variety of dogs behaving --- well, like dogs!  A worthwhile addition to any dog professional's library.

Suzanne Clothier, Lecturer, Trainer and author of BONES WOULD RAIN FROM THE SKY: Deepening Our Relationships With Dogs

My  bookshelf  has a new, permanent addition! Written in a clear, well-organized manner, Canine Behavior: A Photo-Illustrated Handbook is terrific for professionals and pet owners alike. The nuances of canine body language are incredibly well documented and illustrated. I find myself referring to it often just to find out a little more about the communication between my dogs.

Melissa Alexander, Maxwell Award Winning Author of Click For Joy

An extremely thorough reference work.

James O'Heare, CABC Author, Aggressive Behavior in Dogs and The Dog Aggression Workbook President, Companion Animal Sciences Institute

This book is a resource for anyone who is interested in getting to know the species better. The photographs by Monty Sloan, from Wolf Park, are a marvelous attraction. They must cover years of photography and it is always great fun to see the similarities in language between canids. The alphabetical organization and numerous cross-references make this a useful and easy to use reference for dog professionals, kennel owners, shelter workers and veterinary technicians. This is a book that will be well-thumbed in no time!”

Brenda Aloff, Author of Positive Reinforcement: Training Dogs In The Real World; Aggression In Dogs, Canine Body Language, Foundation Behaviours For Every Dog and Get Connected With Your Dog.

Finally, there is a canine behaviorist who understands that the ancestral wolf is ever present in the DNA of our domestic dog and is the template for much of the behavior observed in our 'best friends'.  Canine Behavior: A Photo-Illustrated Handbook illustrates canine body language better than any other book out there.

Charles J. Berger, DVM, Lecturer on the Biology of Dogs.

I think this book hits on a major point that will give it meaning to the general public, as well as to behaviorists. By emphasizing the more easily readable signals given by the wolves, the book will help people interpret the more subtle signals given off by dogs. I think one of the hardest things for learners is to catch those subtle signals in dogs. By showing the same responses in the wolf and the dog, it will make it so much easier for learners to have that "ah ha - lightbulb goes on" moment of understanding.

Barbara Handelman has gone where no one else has taken this subject before, and bridged the gap to facilitate real understanding of canine behavior.

Debi Davis, Assistance Dog Trainer, and Retired Faculty Member of Karen Pryor's Clicker Expo

This book compares the behavior inventory – ethogram - of the wolf (Canis lupus) with the behavior patterns and expressions of various breeds of dogs. Since the wolf is now recognized as the ancestor of our dogs, this comparison is very meaningful. The impression is that while the various breeds of dogs have their own characteristics, the basic motor patterns are the same as those of wolves. The Ethogram based on our wolves at WOLF PARK, is an expansion of one originally prepared by Erik Zimen based on the European wolf. What this photo-illustrated handbook does is to provide a common language to dog people when they talk about the behavior of their dogs. All dog owners, breeders and trainers will find this unique book a very useful addition to their library.

Erich Klinghammer Founder and Director of Wolf Park Research and Education Center, Eckhard H Hess Institute of Ethology, Wolf Park, Battle Ground, IN

The book includes an amazing, well organized collection of photos, depicting a good selection of canine behaviors that all dog owners need to recognize and understand. I enjoyed reading the scientifically accurate interpretations and explanations of the behaviors. Although the book is full of knowledge, reading never became boring due to the illustrations as well as a sense of humor and love for dogs that is evident in your work. The book illustrates not only the knowledge Barbara Handelman has accumulated, but also her deep love for our canine companions.  I will gladly recommend the book to clients, friends, and family as every dog owner, regardless of training and expertise will enjoy this book.

Petra Mertens, Dr. med. vet., FTAV, CAAB, DACVB, Assistant Professor Behavior Medicine, University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine

What a unique and valuable resource!  It contains well-researched information from a variety of sources combined with outstanding photographs!  A great addition to anyone’s library who works with or around dogs.

DVD-Select-Canine-Candates.jpg Selecting Canine Candidates for Working Careers
$20.00

This DVD set was created especially to help individuals hoping to select and train their own assistance dogs.  It is also intended to assist shelter and rescue staff members assess whether a dog in their care might be an appropriate candidate for a working career.

The DVD offers many examples of puppies and dogs being evaluated as potential candidates for a variety of working careers.  Some of the pups are already family dogs, some have been selected for training as assistance dogs, and others are rescue or shelter residents being evaluated for their potential to become Search and Rescue, Drug or other Law Enforcement dogs, or as family pets.

Most individuals hoping to select a candidate to train as their own assistance dog partner, don’t have the opportunity to evaluate hundreds of dogs representing many breeds and breed mixes.   Without such experience it is difficult to assess how a dog or puppy’s behavior during an evaluation might forecast his ability to perform in a working career.  It is always recommended that a dog or pup be evaluated several times, so that no single impression of the dog is given too much weight.  It is also suggested that, whenever possible, a professional assistance dog trainer or canine behaviorist participates in the selection process.

This DVD provides views of dogs with a wide range of strengths and weaknesses being evaluated by Dee Ganley, CPDT.  Dee is a very experienced, professional canine evaluator with years of shelter experience and private work selecting candidates for assistance dog careers.

Included on the second disk are the assessment protocols that were used in the evaluations, and articles explaining scoring, and how to use the evaluation to place a dog appropriately.  There are also many articles from professional trainers, and owner trainers, discussing the selection process for assistance dog candidates.

The hardest part of creating an assistance dog, is finding the right candidate in whom to invest the time, energy and money it takes to produce a safe and sensible working dog.  No temperament evaluation can offer a guarantee that a puppy or adult dog will successfully complete training or succeed in the work environment after training.  There are many risks in the selection and training process.  This DVD is intended as a guide to making an informed choice when selecting candidates for training.
